PEDAGOGY is the noble art of forcing another person to love something that you once couldn’t understand. In ancient Greece, the cradle of this science, Socrates so masterfully asked leading questions that the students themselves found the answers he needed, and he modestly pretended that he had not taught them anything. In Victorian England, on the contrary, pedagogy was often reduced to cramming under the threat of hitting your fingers with a ruler.
