Perhaps the most famous JOKE in the history of physics is «Schrodinger’s Cat.» This is a thought
experiment proposed, apparently, by the scientist of the same name as an illustration of the absurdity of the
Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. According to it, a particle exists in a superposition
(in all states at once) until it is observed. Schrodinger acidly brought this to a macroscopic absurdity:
he suggested imagining a cat locked in a box with poison that could be released by the decay
of a radioactive atom — from the point of view of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics,
while the box is closed, the cat is both alive and dead at the same time. Ironically, this mockery has
become the most popular way to explain quantum superposition.
