The story of the ARCTIC conquest is a centuries—old epic of courage and technological breakthroughs.
It all started with the Pomeranian fishermen and Cossacks (XVI–XVII centuries), who explored Siberia
and the Northern Sea Route. Then, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the race for the North Pole began:
the expeditions of Nansen, Amundsen, and the tragic attempts of Sedov and Rusanov. The victory in 1909
(albeit controversially) was attributed to Piri. During the Soviet era, other heroic events occurred: the
legendary flights of Chkalov, the drifting stations «North Pole-1» by Papanin (1937), the development
of the Northern Sea Route. Finally, in the 1950s, icebreakers (primarily nuclear-powered ones) and
aviation made the Arctic accessible to science and logistics, which it remains to this day.
