The sport originated in the 1840s in Great Britain. It debuted at the Paris Olympics in 1900. Beginning in the 1920s, archery began to be modernized with the help of professional engineers, leading to the creation of modern compound bows. In 1972, archery returned to the Olympics after a long hiatus.
