«Back Beat» was one of the first full-fledged magazines dedicated to percussion instruments and drummers in Russia. It appeared in 2000s, when specialized publications on musical instruments were just beginning to appear in our country, when people still bought paper editions and didn’t browse online video tutorials.
"Back Beat":
1. Subject.
— Interviews with Russian and international drummers
— Reviews of kits, sticks, pedals, and hardware.
— Technique analysis, notation, exercises, and sound tips.
— Reports from festivals, drum battles, and master classes.
— The history of successful instruments, famous bands, and musicians.
2. Format.
A print magazine, published quarterly. It followed the classic magazine format: longreads, interviews, photos, diagrams, and short columns.
Published in Moscow and distributed through music stores and schools.
3. Concept.
The magazine was the first attempt to create a Russian drum culture ecosystem, inspired by the international publications Modern Drummer and Drummer Magazine. The name was chosen symbolically: backbeat is what keeps music alive, and metaphorically, the "heartbeat" of the drum community.
"Back Beat" was a manifesto of an era when drummers in Russia still believed that paper and rhythm could unite a scene.
