With regard to the art of the book, mention should also be made of publishing strategies. Many of the changes that shaped the philosophy of the book began in the 1990s, and independent book publishers played a significant role. One of them, Agey Tomesh, became a model of the Design School, and teachers who created their own book brands and collaborated with the best Russian publishers brought to the School not only their own unique experience but also all the diversity of the book world.

Visual research
A genre of conceptual research that results in a book or a Longrid. This format is a mandatory part of the student’s education programme in any field of the ICU School of Design, whether it be Design, Modern Arts or Mode. Such research involves an analysis of the phenomenon, subject, object or place primarily from a visual point of view. As not just a reference, but as an author, visual research has new, theoretical and practical value.

Book design: students and graduates
The best student books presented in this section are interesting both on their own and through the educational model of the ICU School of Design, which is based on the real demands of the industry. The modern approach to the book project involves not only the writing and presentation of the publication, but also the creation of content and its «smoking». Most of the publications are designed and built from scratch by students, who are given the freedom to choose the subject, text and visual material, structure and interpretation. In a dialogue with teachers, authors develop their own strategies for designing and presenting content. For example, from a model to a model, a new generation of book designers — multidisciplinary, sensitive, and concerned with the subject matter of their work — is gradually emerging.

Books
A printed visual study can cover not only any place, phenomenon or phenomenon, but also the book itself. A thematic cluster of such studies on the history and theory of book art is presented in this area. The historical fonts, the principles of a set of stripes and turns in different eras, the ingenious ornaments of book models, the initial letters, the schmolts and the headlines, the accedenings or the handwriting of the book — all elements and stages of the book’s production can be the starting point for the creation of a fundamental book about books. The authors' detailed interest in the main subject of their profession has also been documented in the opposite projection, in which the participants share their versions of the answers to the main question — what is the book?
