During our field trip to India, we visited cities such as Delhi, Amritsar, Phagwara, and Jalandhar. Throughout the journey, our primary focus of research was the way trucks are decorated and painted.
«Truck Art» is a vibrant form of Indian folk art, rich in ornamentation and symbolism. It expresses the individuality of drivers and reflects the country’s cultural traditions through expressive calligraphy and vivid, saturated colors.
On the rear of every truck, the phrase «Blow Horn» («honk») is always displayed.
This is a vital safety measure, encouraging drivers behind to sound their horn when overtaking. Due to the nature of the roads, heavy and often chaotic traffic, and the frequent absence of rear-view mirrors, a loud auditory signal becomes the only way for a driver to be aware that another vehicle is passing.
For the graphic design, we used elements of truck painting discovered during our research, as they are rich in authentic Indian character and cultural expression.
