The species of exposure ♪ HSE ART GALLERTY
Carnival continues! The second part of the anniversary art exhibition of the PCSS group (Pavel Pepperstein and Sonja Stereostyrsky) demonstrates a detailed view of the new experimental direction in art created by the authors, «carnaval conceptualism».
While the first part of the exhibition at the Design School Gallery (HSE ART GALLERY) in the Pionerka really resembles an accounting event (with more stringent expositions, conceptual blocs and no specific lyrical derogations), the second part in the Vinzaura space is a platform for more nuanced discussions about the genre differences between Moscow’s conceptualism and its «carnaval» successor. It is important to note that at the second Pepperstein and Stereostyrsky Exhibition, they understand the artistic heritage with which they communicate directly. They refer to the group «Collective Action» and its founding father, Andrei Monastyrsky, and find meaningful rhymes with the group «Medical Hermeneutics Inspection».
Overview of the first part of the exhibit
Illustrative structure: «From the branch grew a log», which consists of three elements: «Candera Street» (2025), «Brevno» (2025) and «Physical Dyptists». On the one hand, the project describes the threads linking the «Collective Act» and PCSS groups, the Monastyrsky (Andray) and Stereostyrski (Sonia) names. ==History==The artist’s art alias was born as an embroidery of the name Andrei of Monasty, referring to the «mono» and «stereo» formats used in the recording. Two photos represent the same cover of the gloss magazine, but one of them is rotated 180 degrees. The site «Vrevno» is «Sikvel», as the authors say, the «Vetka» (1996) of the Monastyrsk, and on the street of Zandera, in the area of the MNDH subway, the Monastyrsky itself lives. The «mono» and «stereo» regimes, with which the authors play, report on the group’s artistic trajectory. The PCA world is always a «stereo,» it’s a carnival, a combo, fun, pop culture lights, music rhythms, performance practices and theatre. Working with cultural archetypes, Pepperstein and Stereostyreski share their perception of reality, combining a thorough analytical approach with the carelessness of mass culture.
The exhibition opens with slogans: the red painting demonstrations, which promote the PCA conceptual program, are placed on half the exhibition site. Here, at the entrance, there is a painting of «Slava PCSS» (2026), another game, this time with the work of Eric Bulatov «Slava KPSS» (1990's).

This canvas is preceded by a stunning chair, with one leg, which has an unpleasant appearance of viscous fluid in the pelvic. This object is called the «Seat, one-legged in a dark liquid». Work is about something unexplained, about some secret that leaves a fallout. Indeed, almost the entire practice of PCA is a statement, a secret, a metaphor, an expression that is turned upside down and that has to be interpreted without haste.

In addition to the above, the exhibition shows works from a large project called «Neirodadaism. Unhuman view of the history of European and American art» (2022-2023). On the Pionera, only one visual and plastic aspect of the project can be seen: stylistic experiments with the painting of Pepperstein, «The Fall of a Huligan from the fence» (2023). And at the Winsaurus, there’s a whole range of unusual and thought — provoking ways to deal with unhuman agents and a rich artistic tradition. The artists invented illustrative stories and fed their Midjourney neuronets (version 3 and 4), asking them to create versions of these stories in the manner of famous artists (field of Cesanne, El Greco et al.). The chosen rendezvous, with all their inaccuracy and distortions, turned them into paintings, connecting the warm hands of the artist and the imperfectness of artificial intelligence into one piece of work.

«Neurodadaism» is included in «Cafe Mizanthropique» (Cafe Misanthropique). The paintings created by the neuronet and man are displayed on the walls around the white tables, on the surface of which glasses with napkins were arranged rhythmically. At the tables are white chairs dressed in human clothes. It’s a feeling it wasn’t people who ran into the cafe, and the furniture itself turned into a simulation, got an agency. Or else people disappeared altogether, leaving their artificial sheaths (in this case, clothing) of furniture. Artists reflect on a world in which the principal tenants — nonhuman agents — are confined to themselves and to each other. Where’s the place for a man, his body?

The WEF video station (2021) is also located in the Cafe Mizanthropic section. There’s a VEF radio at the post office with an nominated antenna. Along with the plasma screen, the video: Pepperstein and Stereostyre travel on a radio broadcast scale, picking up pieces of songs, silks, squeaks, and pieces of news programmes — as if reaching to the divinity of the radio background, to the sacrality of the radio. They cite as an analogy a quote from Jorge Luis Borges’s novel: «If in a dream you hear a strange voice, delivering words clearly and clearly, but speaking without being seen, it means that it is God’s voice.» The authors contrast radio television by calling the device a bulging screen a transmitter of the «Living World».

The VEF video is also developing the «music» line of the exhibit. Without any excuse, the video work «Arise» (2026) draws attention to the first steps of young Sonia Stereostyresky in the world of pop music, television shows and modern art. She initiated the child hip-hop band Nightingale Razbuffs. The group quickly found itself in the focus of public attention in the early 2000s, and in 2006 it aired a television programme called «Minute of Fame», which gathered both enthusiastic feedback and criticism.

Near the site was the Karaoke video station (2026), which explores the boundaries of individuality and massity. And next to that is a series of paintings by «Stars» (2020). Pepperstein and Stereostyre compare pop stars to real space lights. Each canvas contains an image of a celestial object, its name, a scientific description, and a poem by Pepperstein, which exemplifies the beauty and incomprehensibleness of a star. In this panegyric, a painter and a poet come together.

Cinematography samples are the next (and rather extensive) main line of the exhibition. The central structure describes the full-length film «White Noise» (2021) and the process of its creation. The first film group in RPTC is an artistic allegorical parable. The production is not credible, nor is it historical, referring to surrealism and dream images. Three plasma screens broadcast images: a complex atmosphere, monochrome, stylization, fantasmagoritism. The narration about the film forms an environment where, in addition to the video, the masks of the actors, photo-documentation from the show, posters, and attributes are placed as in the museum.

Specially for the anniversary project, Pepperstein and Stereostyrsky merged with students at the ICU School of Design, a poster lab led by Yuri Gulitov. Young designers created their versions of the posters for White Noise. Cooperation with young authors, teamwork and involvement in the art process have become important strategies of the exhibition.

There’s a red carpet on the floor with posters, and there’s a high post in the center with a shiny crystal pyramid. This environment reinforces the interest of the art group in the cinema. In 2023, Pavel Pepperstein and Sonia Stereostyrsky established a special award, the Crystal pyramid, to support young authors working at the interface between cinema and modern art. It is ironic that the first award was given by artists to themselves for White Noise, thereby insinuating life into this project. Along the wall is a photo-documentation of the Crystal Pyramid ceremony and an exposition that sets out the conditions for participating in the awards and selecting the works for it.

Another colloquial of artists with young authors can be considered to be the finale of the exhibition. In a special niche between the «Kinematography» and the «Music and Post-Human» nodes of the exhibition, you can see the work of students at the Design School for the book «Mythogen Love of Castes in Comics» (2022), a comic version of Paul Pepperstein and Sergei Anuphriev’s religious novel.

The second part of the PCA report exhibition at the Winsa plant is a full-fledged act of a grand carnival. It is a space where the analytical designs of Moscow’s conceptualism acquire new flesh and blood, turning into «stereoreality» — living, breathing, full of paint, sound, and irony. The iconic VEF captures the voices of the divine air, Karaoke becomes a metaphor for modern identity, and the white noise movie turns into a dream. And all this is about the unbridled art genius.

Pepperstein and Stereostyre are creating an area of total freedom, where the neighborhood is sacrilege and funny, high and low. Each exhibit here is an invitation to play: you can decipher the ciphers on the stars, search for your reflection in the living furniture of the «Misanthropic Cafe» or just meditate by looking at a chair that balances on the edge of the unknown. Carnival is indeed continuing, and its main actor is an spectator who turns from passive observer to co-author of this dusty, multilayered and endlessly fascinating world.
