In a recent issue of «Cultural Communications» podcast, a photographer and director, Volol Medvedev, shared his experience in the creative industry, the creation of videos and the practical approach to creativity. We’re publishing key messages from talking to him.
Multilaterality
There are several types of people in creative work. The first, «crafters,» have been doing the same thing for a long time. Seconds switch from one case to another, and they try themselves in different disciplines. Both approaches occur: people with different temperaments are more comfortable working in different ways. It’s better to find your own way and take into account your specifics. Someone’s gonna have to work in a factory, even if it’s a leatherman or the same cameraman for a long time. There are more and more interdisciplinary people in the industry now. Volya himself started with a picture, then worked as a director, and now he’s designing a package.
Practice
If you want to do something, you’d better get in the hands of a camera and go stuff yourself. There is little point in learning in higher education — there is a community of like — minded people and useful connections, but nothing more. Everything that’s needed for work is learned in practice. The theory is important in universities, but sometimes it can’t go any further. There’s a lot of self-directors in the market right now: it’s a good way if you want to be a craftsman.

Market
In the past, before the departure of foreign companies from the Russian Federation, budgets were markedly larger, unsatisfied and ready for experiments. The market is now full: there are a certain number of established companies that produce and are willing to pay. On the other hand, many local businesses are now emerging. For example, a large number of Russian clothing brands with 100,000 subscribers and more can be found on social media. They came out of the void and were able to rise. When foreign companies return, competition will become even more effective.
WFD
Some people may find it a problem, but you can look at it as an advantage. If you’re a multidisciplinary expert, you have to work with several projects at the same time, switch from one to another, and pass through tons of content. Sometimes it’s hard to focus on one thing and forget everything else. The best thing to do here is to learn to work with it. While you’re working on one project, you write down the ideas of the other (and these are the potential profits), you finish one project, you get the dopamine from it, and you motivate yourself to work on the parallel.

Success
People come to work as directors or other creators to succeed. But he doesn’t have an objective measure. If you set it up to make a lot of money, it’s never gonna be enough. The stand-up guys have a qualifier, and he’s working on braces, which means he’s made a lot of money. It’s best not to focus on money at all. For someone, success is a sense of happiness. A man works with impact, he’s got a good product, and he’s gonna bring him the money. If you put the impact on yourself first, it’s all gonna work out.
